Constantinos Kyriacou, answering the question: How do you approach the creation of a piece of jewelry?

Constantinos Kyriacou, answering the question: How do you approach the creation of a piece of jewelry?

Being now compelled to describe the way in which I approach the creation of a piece of jewellery, I have entered a process of retrospective observation of the ‘self’, in the context of conceptualising design, of course. At some stage of this process I realised that, in the past, there were actually many ways in which I was approaching the creation of a piece. And reflecting on where I stand today, from all those ways I have distilled some, in which I keep functioning.

But I also realize that if I were to adopt a purely descriptive approach, I might fall into traps that will probably disorient the reader. So, it is better to get to know my approach to creation through the very constituents of this writing—a text I am sometimes inside, sometimes outside. Because —this is the conclusion of my contemplation—the process of writing is identical to the process of creating a piece of jewellery. A process that describes itself, regardless of how it is written. (Therefore, it might as well be written as is now, since it is written about me by me, and it might as well be written differently, if it were written by someone else.)

So, the centres I focus my attention on, around which I search and move, and between which I oscillate, are two: the ‘self’ and the ‘other’. It is from the shifting of my attention to points across the whole spectrum between them that all this friction of thoughts and emotions is produced, a friction which will eventually produce. The correlations between the ‘self’ and the ‘other’ are infinite, and so are the interactions between them. And the distance from the one to the other can almost never be measured, since both of them change position, due to their existence, and due to their relationship.

Thus, the relationship between ‘self’ and ‘other’ is indispensable to me, for a piece of jewellery to be created. Or for a jewellery collection, usually a thematic one.

In the case of a collection, the ‘self’ clashes with the ‘other’ and is crushed by it. The ‘other’ is limitless and vast. It’s everything I come to perceive outside the ‘self’. And creation is born, it happens, it is built in moments of scintillation, as I become aware of the relationship between these two. This relationship originates from the need to understand the ‘self’, an understanding that becomes easier and all the more complete through understanding the ‘other’. Although the result is always the same—that is, the ‘self’ and the ‘other’ prove identical in form and usually only differ in their extension, and, often, one forms part of the other in a sort of fractal relationship—, the process is always different. This happens because the topic, the approach, the position of the ‘self’ to the ‘other’ are different, therefore also the result.

The same relationship, that between the ‘self’ and the ‘other’, also holds in the case of an individual piece. In this case, the ‘other’ is the person to be embellished by my creation. On my part, this entails the need to understand who the other person is, before creating a piece. I need to feel the way this person feels, I need to think the way this person thinks. That is, to the extent to which this is feasible, to which the other person allows me to become this other person. This is why I have to connect with this person at the level of spiritual energy. I may have to talk to this person for quite some time, to observe it, up to the moment I trace a chink to look through and start understanding who this person is, or who this person wants me to believe it is. It’s a very intriguing process, which has enriched my perception capabilities. Thus, in this process, my attempt is to function as a channel between the person and the piece of jewellery, until this piece is created and reaches its final owner.

A parallel journey is taken by experimenting on material, on surfaces and techniques, as if diving into small, unfathomed universes, or ‘others’ that are new to me.
New contexts, new relationships to the ‘self’.

The whole process of creation is incessant. It doesn’t even get interrupted during sleep—on the contrary, this is where ideas often get more lucid. The process breathes, it’s alive. It takes shape and constantly changes, until it gets finalised and ‘freezes’, when it reaches its culmination as a finished piece. The moment of freezing is a critical moment, because nothing ever stops moving and changing. Though everything aspires to the absolute balance, this balance, the absolute harmony, only happens for a moment, and then vanishes again. This is where I focus on, to catch the moment of perfect balance, and freeze it in the form of a piece of jewellery.

It is probably obvious that this is a journey to explore ideas and things, nature, the ‘self’ and human beings, all of which actually diverge from each other very little, if you come to look at them carefully. The piece of jewellery is just the vehicle to take this journey—the vehicle, but also the destination, and the origin.

Wishing to have clearly rendered my way of functioning in the creation of jewellery, I would like to remind of the beginning of this text. If this text is incomprehensible regarding the way art is born, at least in my case, then you have comprehended the way a piece of jewellery is created. Let’s call it magic.
